Ultimate Guide to Cooking Pho at Home

Ingredients:

  • 4 pounds of beef bones (marrow or knuckle bones)

  • 5 star anise
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 5 cloves
  • 1 tablespoon of coriander seeds
  • 1 tablespoon of fennel seeds
  • 1 tablespoon of salt
  • 2 tablespoons of fish sauce
  • 1 tablespoon of sugar
  • 1 pound of beef sirloin, sliced thinly
  • 1 package of rice noodles
  • Fresh bean sprouts, lime wedges, and chili peppers for garnish
  • Fresh cilantro, basil, and mint leaves for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F. Place the beef bones on a baking sheet and roast for 30 minutes, or until browned.
  2. In a large pot, add the onions and ginger and cook over medium heat until browned.
  3. Add the roasted beef bones, star anise, cinnamon sticks, cloves, coriander seeds, and fennel seeds to the pot. Cover with water and bring to a boil.
  4. Reduce heat to low and let simmer for at least 6 hours, or until the broth is rich and flavorful.
  5. Strain the broth and discard the solids. Return the broth to the pot and add salt, fish sauce, and sugar. Adjust seasoning to taste.
